Are you a Screener like Steven Furtick?

Pastor Steven Furtick had a blog to spread his gospel.  He was a modern up to the minute type of pastor.  However, he got addicted to reading about himself (on Technorati).   He found some negative posts about himself and this put him into a tizzy.  So he decided end his blogging days.

 “See, I have a strict policy about not reading the negative critical emails that come in around here.

All emails sent to me are screened.

FOR EXAMPLE: An email calling me cocky and arrogant would get deleted, probably before even being read in its entirety.

However, I’m ashamed to say that recently I found a loophole in my own system.
It’s called Technorati. The way I understand it, it’s a search engine for blogs. I do know that it allows me to see what others are saying about me and my blog with up to the hour accuracy.

I got addicted to it 2 weeks ago. Today my detox begins.
I refuse to ride the roller coaster.
For every 10 guys with blogs who think I’m a hero, another guy thinks I’m the anti-Christ.
And the more God elevates the influence of Elevation, the more dangerous and nauseating the roller coaster will become. So I’ve decided to bail.”

If you are shy are you bailing?  Have you decided to screen messages? 

Negative statements are different than criticism.  Negative statements can be hurtful but there can also be a grain of truth in them.  While criticism can also be hurtful the intention is not to hurt someone. 

Perhaps it is time for you to listen to what people are saying to you.  Perhaps if you may feel hurt by what they say but what if they are telling you something important about yourself?  Maybe feeling hurt is your screening method.  You feel hurt therefore you don’t have to listen anymore. 

You have screened out something you find negative but you may have also screened out something valuable. 

Overcoming and dealing with shyness is a battle.  It is your personal struggle.  You are already down on yourself.  Why hear more downers?  Maybe it is not a downer you are hearing and reacting to.  Maybe it is your own frustration that you are sensing in these messages. 

Don’t repress your thoughts.  Don’t screen them out.  Check them out.  Take a step back and look at the message in a detached way.  Look for the value and what you can implement from the message. 

Don’t insulate yourself.  You are an expert at that.  Start to become more open.  Start removing judgement from the messages you hear.  Just observe them. 

See what happens when you stop being a screener.

Tip 3. Appearance

Good looking and fashionable people are the ones who get more attention from the audience. Being shy can also be a product of not so being confident on how you look in front of people. To enhance your image, you may want to consider these points relative to your appearance:• Clean body that comes with clothes. Be sure that you are clean from head to toe. Hygiene and proper grooming are important aspects in image enhancement. Putting on that clean apparel from top to bottom can give you an edge in any occasions. Making sure that your body and what you’re wearing are neat will help you feel secure about yourself and your appearance.

• Proper color coordination. Be careful on what you wear as this can be a mirror of your personality. Combination of colors should be perfect. Neck ties should be matched with your inner shirt; belts and shoes should have the same color.

• Put on the right make up. Woman should always be conscious about her make up. Any color will do for fair skinned while light shades of purple and pink goes with dark skinned women. Choosing the right lipstick should also be a priority.

• Clean cut hair. You wouldn’t want to look like a rock star over a corporate meeting. Make sure that your hair is well trimmed and that it doesn’t cover your face.

Positive thinking is a good enhancer of personality. Nothing compares to an aura of self contentment and serenity. Shyness is developed by negative thoughts that others are far better than you. Stop that nonsense and start appreciating yourself. Look at the mirror every morning and say to yourself “You are a beautiful creation of God!”

Shyness and Public Speaking

Hey did you know there is a shyness institute?  There are academics that are studying shyness.  A lot of people are shy.    

Shyness can be situational.  For example you can be shy when it comes to public speaking.  The rest of the time you are rock and roll.  

I bet you think you can avoid public speaking and be fine.   Public speaking probably sounds like something that will not be a big issue in your life.  Yet if you think about it public speaking is a biggie.  What is public speaking?  Think about speaking in class.  That is public speaking.  Think about asking a question at a lecture you paid big bucks for.  That is public speaking.  Think about making a toast at your best friend’s wedding.  That is public speaking.  Think about updating your colleagues at work.  That is public speaking. 

Public speaking is a part of your life right now.  Fear of public speaking is a part of your life right now.  You can overcome your shyness now.
